Season Highlights from B&H London

The 2017/18 season sees new Boosey & Hawkes works in the spotlight from London, Berlin and Vienna to Istanbul and Beijing. Composers with world premieres include Chen, Chin, Clyne, Dean, Lindberg, MacMillan, Simpson and Turnage.

Special events include the first posthumous performances of Rautavaara’s last orchestral work, a Gruber feature in Stockholm, multiple productions of 3D operas by Michel van der Aa, and major celebrations for Bernstein at 100 in London and Paris.

Season Highlights from B&H New York

2017/18 premieres include John Adams’s new opera Girls of the Golden West in San Francisco, Sebastian Currier’s RE-FORMATION in Minneapolis, Christopher Rouse’s Berceuse Infinie in Baltimore, and a new orchestral work by Sean Shepherd in Boston.

Highlights include the launch of the Bernstein centennial at the Kennedy Center, major productions of operas by Carlisle Floyd and David T. Little, performances of Anna Clyne in Berkeley and Baltimore, and special features on Argento and Druckman in New York.

Turnage’s Hibiki at the BBC Proms

Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Hibiki, for soloists, children’s choir and orchestra, receives its first European performance at the BBC Proms on 14 August, conducted by Kazushi Ono.

The 50-minute score combines an extrovert central dance with a sequence of six threnodies offering consolation to Japan after war, earthquake and tsunami.

The Beethoven 250th anniversary in 2020 is set to forge links with later composers inspired by his music, from Richard Strauss to John Adams and Brett Dean.

A survey of 20th century and contemporary works from the B&H catalogue reveals connections with Beethoven’s craftsmanship, modernism and political aspirations for humankind.

Late Carter works on new Ondine disc

Virgil Blackwell introduces a new disc of Elliott Carter’s late works, including Dialogues I and IISoundingsInterventions and his final chamber trio Epigrams

The starry line-up of leading Carter interpreters includes Pierre Laurent-Aimard, Oliver Knussen and Colin Currie with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.

Commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra to mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, Currier’s score looks back from Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony to Luther’s hymn Ein Feste Burg and its sources in Psalm 46, while his setting of Sarah Manguso’s poem looks forward to renewal and regeneration.
