Andriessen series at the Barbican in London

Dutch composer Louis Andriessen is featured in a series of events at the Barbican in February, bearing the title M is for Man, Music & Mystery.

Highlights include the UK premieres of his Dante-inspired opera La Commedia and his orchestral work Mysteriën within a Total Immersion day presented by the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Ginastera Centennial in Buenos Aires and beyond

Opening events celebrating the Ginastera Centennial in 2016 focus on Buenos Aires, with a new staging of his opera, Beatrix Cenci, and a series of ten concerts.

International highlights include Gustavo Dudamel conducting Piano Concerto No.1 in Los Angeles, New York, London and Paris, concerto performances in Madrid, Berlin and São Paulo and a collection of new recordings.

Turnage ballet score for Christopher Wheeldon

Mark-Anthony Turnage’s new dance collaboration with choreographer Christopher Wheeldon explores the scandal surrounding John Singer Sargent’s painting of Madame X.

The premiere is at the Royal Opera House in London on 12 February, as part of an all-Wheeldon triple bill danced by The Royal Ballet.

Transatlantic performances of Aa’s Book of Disquiet

A new English version of Michel van der Aa’s The Book of Disquiet is staged at Montclair State University in January and at the Coronet Theatre by the London Sinfonietta in February.

Actor Samuel West stars in the new staging, which combines live performance and film to explore the multiple identities in the poetry of Fernando Pessoa.

Clyne’s The Seamstress receives UK premiere

Anna Clyne’s recent work for violin and orchestra, The Seamstress, travels with soloist Jennifer Koh to the Barbican in London in January for its UK premiere, following performances in Chicago and São Paulo.

Clyne’s inspiriation for the work combines memories of a WB Yeats poem with Irish fiddle melodies, drawing together elements of weaving and storytelling.

Machover is Musical America’s Composer of the Year

Tod Machover has been selected as Musical America’s 2016 Composer of the Year, in recognition of his creative work in the fields of composition and technology.

Following his residency at the Lucerne Festival this summer, Machover was in Detroit in November for the latest of his city symphony series, drawing together crowd-sourced sounds and live performance.
