Dear Friends of Ensemble Variances,

Welcome to our Spring Newsletter. I’m just back from Caen, where I was the 37th composer-in-residence for the Festival Aspects de Musiques d’aujourd’hui. During its history the festival has hosted Crumb, Kagel, and Dutilleux, Carter, so I was truly honored to be in such esteemed company.

Winter is well behind us but I would like to offer a snapshot of our international activities. In November we began our North American tour at the superb Detroit Institute of the Arts. We celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the sister city relationship of Cleveland and Rouen with concerts and a residency at Baldwin Wallace University, and ended with a sold out performance for Vancouver’s Music on Main Festival. We are grateful for the support from the Institute Français de Paris, the New Music Fund (FACE Foundation), and the Sister City Association of Cleveland-Rouen.

Earlier this year we completed a joyous countrywide French tour of our French-Indian project Sangâta. Ensemble Variances collaborated with Ragini Shankar (Indian violin), Rishab Prasanna (bansuri flute), and Amaan Ali (tabla). The reception was overwhelming so we are currently planning for the long life of Sangâta.

Nahasdzáán in the Glittering World

We are now in final rehearsals for the world premiere of Nahasdzáán in the Glittering World – dance-oratorio with a libretto by Navajo poet Laura Tohe, directed by Luc Petton, renowned for his staging of animals and dancers.
Nahasdzáán opens at Opera Rouen on 23 April 2019. An outstanding international cast including soprano Christie Finn (USA/Germany), alto Noa Frenkel (Israel/Netherlands), tenor Oliver Brignall (UK), and baritone John Taylor Ward (USA/Netherlands) joins Ensemble Variances.
Audiences should expect for their view of the operatic experience to be re-defined. We are creating a new ecology of performance. We are very grateful for our partners Opéra de Rouen Normandie, Théâtre de Caen, and Le Guetteur.
