1) Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art

June 17 – September 29, 2019 NAISA’s 21st annual edition of the Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art continues to September 29th at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River. “A sound artist might consider all sounds as the basis for creating auditory experiences. These sounds could include sounds made by common household objects and industrial materials. Some of these sounds might evoke dread, such as those of flies and mosquitos, but when transformed by the sound artist, might also inspire a sense of wonder and delight. Similarly, industrial materials can equally be transformed into an elaborate percussion orchestra. This summer the works included in Sound Travels takes us a little off the beaten track by teasing out the inner beauty inherent within objects that we never thought possible.” – Darren Copeland, Artistic Director, New Adventures in Sound Art. Featured this year are interactive installations by Stephanie Castonguay and Sonia Paço-Rocchia, community workshops using discarded materials with Mark Sepic as well as performances by these three artists and Alan Bloor.

2) Sound Travels Final Exhibition

Lames @ NAISA by Sonia Paço-Rocchia Aug 8 – Sept 29, Thursday to Monday, 10am – 4pm Pay By Donation Lames @ NAISA is an interactive installation for an ensemble of automated musical saws. The piece is a sonic story about what it feels not to walk on the beaten track, the anxiety and the liberty it gives. The composition follows paths that are chosen depending on how the visitors position themselves in the room.

3) Sound Travels Final Performances

Dual Abrasives by Alan Bloor Aug 31 @ 7pm, $10 Dual Abrasives, will compare two (of many) sound projects of Alan Bloor: Knurl and Pholde. Both of these projects use the treated analog sounds of metals cultures from found objects. Knurl, began in 1994, as an idea to capture the very harsh and abrasive sounds of the welding shops in which Bloor worked. Pholde, which was initiated in 2002, has a more suspenseful, “ambient” sound. In this project, Bloor uses the natural resonances of the metal. Double-Tranchant @ NAISA by Sonia Paço-Rocchia during Culture Days Sep 27-29, 2019, 11 am to 3 pm, FREE Double-Tranchant @ NAISA is a drop-in live performance by Sonia Paço-Rocchia that will take place during Culture Days weekend using musical saws and other instruments inspired by objects that can cut. The performance is a commentary on the contrast between the brute, the sharp and the flexible, the fascinating.
