Die Theresienstädter Komponisten
Music at the Outer Limits of Life – Composers in Theresienstadt

The Czech composers Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Rudolf Karel, Victor Ullmann and Hans Krása were interned in the Nazi concentration camp Theresienstadt (Terezín). Despite catastrophic conditions in the camp, they kept composing there, becoming protagonists of cultural life in the »model ghetto« of Theresienstadt – a cultural life that was only possible in hiding at first, but was later abused for propaganda purposes. On October 16, 1944 they were deported to the death camps. 75 years to the day after this deportation, Ensemble Modern commemorates the Theresienstadt composers in a concert at the Kunstverein Familie Montez.

Win Tickets to the Ceremony of the Academy ›Musiktheater heute‹

›Akademie Musiktheater heute‹ is a training programme of the Deutsche Bank Foundation for young artists working in musical theatre. Every year, 15 scholarships are awarded to stage and costume designers, conductors, dramaturges, composers, cultural managers, librettists and stage directors. For the first time, the fellows collaborate with Ensemble Modern, creating three works of musical theatre on the theme of ›ménage-à-trois‹. These will be given their world premieres together with singers from the Frankfurt am Main Academy of Music and Performing Arts during a ceremony at Frankfurt LAB. Because seats are extremely limited, tickets are being distributed via a raffle. If you would like to attend, please submit your name for the drawing before October 31, 2019.

Mark Andre riss
First Complete Recording of Mark Andre’s ›riss‹ Cycle

Mark Andre is highly sensitive and inquisitive as to the nature of sounds. His music often borders the audible. In the group of works entitled ›riss‹, the composer goes in search of intermediate spaces. Tears and rips are an intermediate place, a separation and a reconciling between things which belong together, but also a chance to see what is hidden behind. Ensemble Modern has made the first recording of the cycle under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher, produced by hr2-kultur. The CD will be released on Ensemble Modern Media and is available from October 11 onwards via our Shop and retailers.
