[Plateforme Ulysse] ULYSSES Network Newsletter – April 2021

Header Newsletter Ulysses March 2019

Dear Friends of the ULYSSES Network,

We hope that this newsletter finds you well!

Unfortunately, the pandemic is still inhibiting and slowing down activities in Europe. More than ever, the ULYSSES Network partners collectively swing into action, offering professional work opportunities to young artists, by supporting their careers and developing cooperation, and investing virtual spaces for creation and encounters.
Check out the upcoming events and activities below, and stay in touch and up to date via our Timeline, the ULYSSES Platform and social media.

In the hope of meeting you soon again face-to-face, stay safe and take care.

Aart Strootman

(HR, IT, NL)

The ULYSSES Network supports young composers with co-commissions.

In this framework, Gaudeamus and Divertimento Ensemble co-commission a new work from Aart Strootman.
Aart’s star is rising, after winning the annual Gaudeamus Award (2017) and the biggest Dutch prize for contemporary music, the Matthijs Vermeulenprijs (2019).

He dedicates his new work to the Black Page Orchestra, the Vienna-based ensemble, selected as one of the young ensembles to be supported by the ULYSSES Network.

Aart’s piece will be premiered in an online concert on 18th April 2021 at the Music Biennale Zagreb (HR), one of the ULYSSES Network’s associate partners.

The Black Page Orchestra is then touring to Milan (IT) in July 2021, where the piece is performed again on an invitation by Divertimento Ensemble, before being performed once more in Utrecht (NL) in September 2021, during Gaudeaumus Muziekweek.

ULYSSES Journeys for composers and performers –

In the framework of its international Composition Seminar, the IEMA-Ensemble 2020/21 invites two young composers, participating in the ULYSSES Journeys, to create world premieres in two steps :

The first period in April is about “try-out” and “input” under the guidance of the experienced members of Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt (DE).

The second period in September contains the rehearsals and concerts, including the world premieres at Herrenhaus Edenkoben (DE), followed by an additional concert at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt (HfMDK).

The project also involves the accordionist Maria Mogas Gensana in the framework of her ULYSSES Journey for performers.

ULYSSES Journeys for composers and performers – Divertimento Ensemble (IT)

In the framework of the International Divertimento Ensemble Academy (IDEA), several young performers and composers benefit from ULYSSES Journey stops.

On the one hand, two pianists selected by the ULYSSES Network participate in the masterclass held by Maria Grazia Bellocchio which is dedicated to the contemporary piano repertoire by Alessandro Solbiati, who will attend some of the lessons as a tutor. At the end of the lessons, the participating young performers will perform a public concert on 26th May 2021.

On the other hand, one young composer selected by the Network will participate in the International Online Workshop for Young Composers, led by Mauro Lanza.
The workshop for solo pieces, involving young composers from all over the world, concludes with a concert on 5th May 2021 as part of the Milan Rondò season, simultaneously streamed online, but also recorded and published on the Divertimento Ensemble Digital Stage.
