Reich at 80: premieres of Pulse and Runner

Two new Steve Reich ensemble works are announced for premiere in November, within celebrations in New York and London for his 80th birthday.
Pulse is premiered in an all-Reich concert at Carnegie Hall, and its UK premiere is within the Barbican’s Steve Reich at 80 series. Runner receives its first performance at The Royal Ballet in London in a new dancework choreographed by Wayne McGregor.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies: 1934-2016

Following the death of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies on 14 March, Paul Griffiths pays tribute to the pioneering composer whose works redefined British music in the 1960s, ’70s and beyond.
The versatility of ‘Max’ ranged from shocking music theatre classics such as 8 Songs for a Mad King, through elaborate scores fusing plainsong chant with symphonic thought, to works inspired by his adopted Scotland such as An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise.

Qigang Chen’s new orchestral variations

The UK premiere of Qigang Chen’s orchestral variations Luan Tan is given by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on 26 May, following performances in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
This month brings the release by Naxos of a new recording featuring Chen’s piano concerto Er Huang, Enchantements oubliés and Un temps disparu. His trumpet concerto Joie Eternelle for Alison Balsom receives its German premiere in Munich in June.

Ranging from settings of Verlaine and Baudelaire to transcriptions of piano works, the featured orchestrations by Adams, Christodoulou, Dean and Holloway transform the originals with insider knowledge of Debussy’s orchestration combined with distinct touches from the composers themselves.

Thom Willems: ballet scores for Forsythe

The special partnership between composer Thom Willems and choreographer William Forsythe is in the spotlight in July at the Paris Opéra Ballet, the company that has performed their collaborative danceworks over 300 times.
The Forsythe triple bill, celebrating his return as Associate Choreographer, includes two Willems ballet scores, a new version of Approximate Sonata and the addition of Of Any If And to the Paris repertoire.

Elliott Carter: UK premieres in Aldeburgh

Two late song-cycles by Elliott Carter, The American Sublime and A Sunbeam’s Architecture, receive their UK premieres at the Aldeburgh Festival in June.
These are the last major UK premieres by the American composer who died in 2012. Oliver Knussen, who has championed Carter in Aldeburgh and beyond, conducts performances by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Britten Sinfonia.

Stravinsky: Myths and Rituals in London

Esa-Pekka Salonen’s new Stravinsky series with the Philharmonia Orchestra, exploring the full range of the composer’s output, is launched in May with further performances in September.
Embracing music, dance and drama, the series includes classic Stravinsky works, stagings of Agon by Karole Armitage and Oedipus Rex by Peter Sellars, and rare performances of Perséphone and Requiem Canticles. Two of the concerts also travel to the Festival d’Aix en Provence in July.
