biographies, books, music scores, sound recordings, videos… available in  databases

The gateway to contemporary music in France is a search engine for art music resources from 1945 to this day held by French institutions.
This gateway allows you to listen to many excerpts of unpublished sound archives of conferences and concerts and to read the program notes which were produced for these events.
The gateway glossary (in French) defines the main concepts concerning contemporary music and provides many references.
An interactive map displays the structure of the glossary, allows one to browse it and, from there, to related contents which are referenced in the gateway: composers' biographies, work excerpts, etc.
An interactive tag cloud displays the composers who are most referenced in the gateway and provides access to the contents related to them (their biographies and their works, documents about them, etc.).
A timeline shows the composers for whom one or more biographies (in French and/or in English) are available through the gateway.
An interactive map shows the main French contemporary music organizations and provides their address.

What you can find in the gateway

Express (see top of the page) and detailed search help you find and localize contemporary music resources which are made available by the partners of the gateway:

  • Documents (books, periodicals, scores, commercial and archival sound recordings, movies, program notes, databases…).
  • Events (concerts, festivals, conferences, lectures, courses… - see also Agenda on the right)
  • Addresses (of organizations, of musicians).

This allows you to find out which library holds specific documents regarding a work (recordings, scores, analyses, press…) and where and when it will be performed in concert, or to read online biographies of composers and program notes of past concerts.

Many excerpts of unpublished sound archives are available online. An icon shows whether it is accessible from the internet (green) or on site (red).

The advanced search form allows one to specify additional criteria.
The refine feature (on the left) allows one to narrow down a long list of resources and show only those corresponding to this or that criterion.
You can send questions to the gateway: the contact button is present on every page. You will be answered promptly.
You can choose which sound recording excerpts (concerts, conferences) to listen to among those referenced by the gateway, or listen to those it streams non-stop.
The technical documentation specifies the formats and protocols used by the gateway software. A paper (in French) and a slide show (in English) explain how it works.
